Background

Michigan State University's (MSU) School of Criminal Justice has created a three-course on-line certificate program that allows working professionals and graduate students to add a specialization in homeland security to their career or academic plans.

The School of Criminal Justice at MSU is a national leader in homeland security, incident planning and management. The School has decades of experience and proven expertise in both public and private emergency preparedness, planning and training. The online Certificate in Homeland Security Studies complements the School's other emergency management offerings, including non-credit professional development certificate programs and courses for academic credit. The Homeland Security Certificate program is designed for practitioners, students, and others interested in updating their knowledge, skills, and abilities to address the challenging issues of public safety in the 21 st century.

The three (3) course certificate program includes:

  • Homeland Security (3 credits)
  • Terrorism (3 credits)
  • Public-Private Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security (3 credits)

The Homeland Security Certificate program is offered exclusively on-line through the ANGEL (A New Global Environment for Learning) system developed by MSU. Lectures, discussions, and assignments will be managed entirely through the ANGEL system. For additional information on ANGEL, please visit: http://angel.msu.edu.

Each course spans 15 weeks; the entire certificate program can be completed in less than one year. There are no prerequisites and no required sequence for these courses.

Participants enrolled in these courses may apply credit from these classes toward a degree program at MSU (provided they meet the standards for admission) or another institution or toward the Certificate in Homeland Security Studies offered by the MSU School of Criminal Justice.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successful conclusion of the program.
